Daniel and Majella O’Donnell say recent loss taught them to slow down and enjoy life

The much loved couple have revealed that as they get older they are soaking up every minute they can with family and grandchildren, and learning the importance of enjoying every moment they can

Daniel and Majella O’Donnell have opened up about making the most of their best years admitting they have a new sense of appreciating every moment.

Daniel recently took a break from performing to focus on his after struggling with chest infections and revealed that he wanted to address the hectic pace he had been operating at, telling RSVP Live: “I think everybody, as they get a wee bit older, you have to look at what you do and take a look at that pace.”

And while Majella admitted Daniel didn’t struggle with the transition to life off the road, she revealed she could never see him stopping performing altogether.

“I think, well for Daniel anyway, once there’s something that he can sing at, he’s happy because he’ll never stop singing. But it just might not be all the time”.

Majella added that as the couple got older, dealing with the heartbreak of losing friends and those close to them, also brought a new sense of appreciating the need for balance in your life, admitting: I mean our good friend, Moya Brennan, passed away recently, and she’s not that much older than what we are. So you have to realise that life is getting short and we’re getting to maybe the last 20 years, which can go just like that. So you just have to enjoy it.”

She added: “It’s about making memories more than anything. It’s a good time in life — and we want to enjoy it.”

The couple have been focusing on spending time with family and making the most of the time off, with Daniel even enjoying a spot of babysitting while Majella enjoyed a girls trip with her daughter Siobhan, as he revealed: “We’re doing a few things that were sort of fixed already, mostly charity work, but I’m enjoying the time off. We’ve spent a wee bit of time babysitting, which is lovely. Majella and Siobhan were away for a week to have a mother-daughter week, and I was with Gavin to help look after the three kids. So it’s lovely to have a good time with them.”

The couple who recently revealed that they were due their fifth grandchild, also added they planned to head to Australia ahead of the new arrival, adding: “And next year we’re hoping to go to Australia for two months — that should be gorgeous, because Michael and Sarah are there with Jack. So we’re hoping that, please God, if the war doesn’t affect the world.

Speaking about the chest infections that he had been battling prior to his time off, Daniel admitted that he was feeling well adding: “I don’t know — I’m not singing much so it’s less obvious, but I’m still spluttering from time to time. But listen, I am fine, I am very well. I have no issues with it.”
