IMD Weather Update: The Indian Meteorological Department has released its latest weather bulletin for May 18th across the country. According to this weather bulletin, two distinct weather patterns are being observed across the country. While the sun is blazing across the plains of North India, a thunderstorm and heavy rainfall alert has been issued for more than 21 states in South and Northeast India. According to this morning’s IMD report, tornadoes with winds of up to 60 km per hour are expected in several states.
The silver lining is that the monsoon is progressing at its pace and is expected to make landfall in Kerala by May 26th.
According to the IMD’s morning bulletin, pre-monsoon activities in South, East, and Northeast India have triggered an alert for torrential rain and thundersqualls.
Thunderstorms and tornadoes (up to 60 kmph) are expected in these areas.
Thunderstorms with strong winds and lightning are expected in several states today:
Severe thunderstorms: Winds of up to 50-60 kmph are possible in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and interior Karnataka. Hailstorms are also likely in some areas of Karnataka.
Severe thunderstorms (40-50 kmph): Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, coastal Karnataka, West Bengal (Gangetic Coast), Jharkhand, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Central Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Vidarbha.
Moderate thunderstorms (30-40 kmph): Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
Heavy Rain Alert in These States
According to the IMD, torrential rains may impact life in these areas today:
South India: Kerala, Mahe, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Lakshadweep.
Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Islands: Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Severe Heat Wave in North India
While there is rain, the states of North and Central India are scorching:
Uttar Pradesh: There is an extreme heat wave alert in Western Uttar Pradesh. A heat wave will also affect Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Other States: Heat wave conditions will persist in Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Vidarbha, and Marathwada.
Western Rajasthan: There is a Warm Night Alert today, meaning there will be no respite even at night.
How far has the monsoon advanced? Monsoon Update 2026
The Northern Limit of the Monsoon (NLM) currently lies between 5°N/75°E and 15.5°N/98°E. Conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance further into the southeast Arabian Sea and the central Bay of Bengal over the next 2-3 days. The monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by May 26 (± 4 days).
Warning for Fishermen and Marine Areas
Arabian Sea: Gale-force winds with speeds reaching 60 km/h are likely along the Kerala, Karnataka coast, and Lakshadweep.
Bay of Bengal: The sea will remain rough in the Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, and Andaman Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas until May 22.
Temperature Forecast
Temperatures in northwest India are expected to rise by another 3-5°C over the next three days (until May 21st). However, temperatures in Maharashtra and Gujarat are expected to drop by 2-3°C from May 20th, providing some relief.
