Established in 1966, St. Patrick’s Institute of Science & Technology is one of Karachi’s pioneering institutions in technical and vocational education. Founded during a period of rapid industrial expansion in Pakistan, the institute emerged in response to the growing national need for technically trained manpower to support the country’s industrial progress.
During the 1960s, Pakistan experienced significant growth in manufacturing, engineering, transport, and infrastructure. As factories and workshops expanded, so did the demand for skilled technicians, mechanics, electricians, and machinists. Recognizing this urgent requirement, the leadership of St. Patrick’s High School acted with foresight and commitment to establish a dedicated institution focused on technical and skilled education.

With the collaboration of Misereor German donor organizations and the support of the respected La Salle Brothers congregation, two visionary educators played central roles in bringing the project to life – Fr. Stephen Raymond and Fr. Dalmatius Geurts. Their dedication helped establish one of Karachi’s earliest purpose-built technical institutes, complete with specialized workshops, training spaces, and modern learning facilities for its era.
Today, the institute continues its tradition of excellence under the leadership of our existing Principal, Rev. Fr. Mario Angelo Rodrigues, whose guidance and commitment continue to strengthen the institution’s mission of providing quality technical and scientific education.
The early curriculum was carefully designed to meet industry requirements. Courses included Auto Mechanics, Electricity, Machine Shop Engineering, and Refrigeration & Air Conditioning – disciplines essential to Pakistan’s growing industrial and commercial sectors. Graduates of these programs entered factories, service industries, transport companies, and engineering firms with employable skills and professional confidence.
Over the decades, the institution has evolved alongside technological advancements. Reflecting its expanded scope and modern mission, it is now known as St. Patrick’s Institute of Science & Technology. Today, it offers additional technology-oriented disciplines that prepare students for the changing demands of contemporary industry and innovation.
The institute is duly registered and affiliated with the Sindh Board of Technical Education and STEVTA. It offers the Technical School Certificate (T.S.C.) programs for Classes IX & X in the following trades:
> Electrical
> Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
> Automotive
> Radio & Electronics
> Computer Science
In addition, the institute offers a three-year Diploma of Associate Engineering (D.A.E.) program in the following technologies:
> Mechanical
> Electrical
> Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
> Auto & Diesel
> Electronics
> Computer Information Technology
Among its notable modern initiatives is the specialized Automotive Course under the Toyota Technical Education Program (T-TEP), developed in collaboration with Toyota Indus Motor Company. This program provides students with practical training aligned with current automotive standards and systems.
The institute has also embraced digital education. Recently, it inaugurated the Michael Deans Computer Laboratory, established through the dedicated efforts of Rev. Fr. Mario A. Rodrigues, who approached and secured generous funding for the Technical Institute from the Deans family of Toronto, Canada. This contribution symbolizes the enduring bond between alumni and the next generation of technical minds.
As it approaches six decades of service, St. Patrick’s Institute of Science & Technology proudly reflects on its legacy of producing hundreds of technically qualified graduates who have contributed not only to Pakistan’s industry but also to regional economies abroad.
