The Senate has passed a government bill increasing compensation for passengers in cases involving death or injury during air travel due to airline fault. Under the amended law, compensation has been increased from Rs. 5 million to Rs. 20 million.
Tariq Fazal Chaudhry presented the Carriage by Air (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Senate, where it was approved through a majority vote despite opposition demands to send the bill to a standing committee.
According to the proposed changes, airlines will not be liable for damages exceeding Rs. 20 million per passenger if they prove the incident did not occur due to negligence or wrongful conduct by the carrier or its staff.
The government said the amendment was necessary to keep compensation limits aligned with international standards and inflationary trends. The bill had already been passed by the National Assembly and now awaits assent from Asif Ali Zardari to become law.
